Their purpose is to help instructors achieve training goals, so trainees can acquire knowledge and then retain it. So, when instructional designers need to determine the exact steps of their training procedure, they turn to instructional design models.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are more than twenty-five commonly accepted prescriptive instructional design methodologies. <strong>The most common ones include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ADDIE<\/li>\n<li>Dick and Carey<\/li>\n<li>Assure<\/li>\n<li>The Kirkpatrick Model<\/li>\n<li>Gerlach-Ely Model<\/li>\n<li>TPACK and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What do they all have in common?<\/p>\n<p><strong>All instructional design models come with the elements that<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/educationaltechnology.net\/instructional-design-models-and-theories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Branch and Merrill<\/strong><\/a> (2002) explained all instructional design models should consist of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clear, well-defined goals.<\/li>\n<li>Outcomes that are measurable, reliable, and valid.<\/li>\n<li>Data that are the heart of the whole process, so designers should keep it empirical.<\/li>\n<li>A team effort during designing.<\/li>\n<li>Real-life behaviors from learners, applicable to real-world problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a id=\"Defining the ADDIE training model\"><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>And the ADDIE training model meets all these requirements.<\/strong> Let\u2019s look at ADDIE more closely now:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Definition of the ADDIE training model<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So, what does \u201cADDIE\u201d mean?<\/p>\n<p>Basically, \u201cADDIE\u201d comes from a simple acronym. <strong>As a 5 step training model, its name refers to the 5 different stages of creating a course:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>nalysis<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong>esign<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong>evelopment<\/li>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>mplementation<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong>valuation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The reason <strong>the model is called ADDIE is that every step should be taken in that exact order<\/strong>. However, the ADDIE model follows a circular pattern that repeats itself until trainees reach perfection. Also, due to the last stage of the ADDIE learning model <em>(evaluation)<\/em>, you get all the feedback you need so you can keep on improving both your skills and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/learner-experience-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">learners\u2019 experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In general, when we\u2019re talking about the overall ADDIE process, we\u2019re not referring to an instructional design model per se. It\u2019s, most of the time, <strong>the primary process most instructional designers choose to create courses and learning material<\/strong>. So, if you\u2019re interested in the application of the ADDIE model, we strongly suggest that you keep reading for more info:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. A is for Analysis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the beginning, there was research <em>\u2014 it all starts with it, after all, doesn\u2019t it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, the first thing you want to do is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/identify-performance-gaps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>analyze the current training ground<\/strong><\/a>, and see your trainees\u2019 knowledge gaps, their past training, what\u2019s worked, what hasn&#8217;t, and so on. This is actually among the most essential phases of the training process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You may even ask yourself about the purpose of your training.<\/strong> So, except for the current situation, you need to look into your goals and expectations from your program, as well as the media and methodologies you\u2019re going to use.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds intimidating? Don\u2019t worry! Here&#8217;s a tip for you: <strong>Use the method that the journalistic community lives by.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When reporters want to write a story, they ask themselves six questions that they must address as soon as their article starts (lede). This is the <strong>\u201c5 W\u2019s and an H\u201d rule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong>ho is going to receive your training? <em>(Analyze your trainees)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong>hat will your training be about? <em>(The context of your training)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong>hen is it going to happen? <em>(Set a time-frame right off the bat)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong>here is it going to happen? <em>(Will you deliver it online or in a classroom?)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>W<\/strong>hy are you doing this? <em>(The objectives of your training)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>H<\/strong>ow are you going to achieve this? <em>(The methodology and the requirements)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have a clear answer to each one of these questions as well as a general analysis of the current situation, then you have completed both your plan and the very first step.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. D is for Design<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You know what the first step in the ADDIE training process is. Now it\u2019s time to turn theory (Analysis) into action (Design).<\/p>\n<p>The very first thing you want to do is to <strong>decide what format you are going to be using<\/strong>. Is it going to be an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/how-create-interactive-online-training-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interactive training course<\/a>,<\/strong> a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentcards.com\/blog\/addie-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">microlearning course<\/a><\/strong>, or a<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video course<\/a><\/strong>? The ADDIE model is great for creating courses but you are the one who needs to determine what type of course it\u2019s going to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, figure out the methodology and the strategy of your training delivery.<\/strong> In what order are you going to feature each section of your training? Are you going to brief your trainees first (preliminary training) to motivate them? How much time are they going to need to complete your course? These may sound like simple questions, but they need answers <em>before<\/em> you start creating your prototype.<\/p>\n<p>After that, you have to make sure your course is ready to go. Don\u2019t unleash it into the wild just yet. <strong>Test it with members of your team to see whether you need to make any small (or even significant) adjustments<\/strong>, and conclude the final product overview.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Another D for Development<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Develop to engage: this should be your third-step mantra.<\/p>\n<p>The step of Development in the ADDIE training model is nothing more than putting all the ideas and the core creative designs you\u2019ve thoughtfully planned into action. All the decisions you\u2019ve taken during the Design stage are now going to work as guides for the Development phase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polish the details by adding graphs, colors, graphics, multimedia, etc.<\/strong> Some people might feel like they\u2019re shifting the deckchairs on the Titanic (I see you, you technical junkies!) but the level of learner engagement will increase. Dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>The Development phase will need a lot of testing. Create your course and start testing it so you can check for grammatical, syntax, or spelling errors and, if using an online learning platform, that there are no bugs in modules, navigation, etc.<\/p>\n<p>One last thing you might want to check is your content. Is it too long? Maybe too short to include all the information in a comprehensible way perspicuously? What about the flow and the pacing? Does it grab your trainees\u2019 attention?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. I stands for Implementation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve finished your research, designs, and testing it\u2019s high time you shared your course with the world. Identify any gaps you need to fill and address them right away, either in this specific course or in future ones.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The benefits of the ADDIE training model (and ONE disadvantage)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We know that presenting the benefits for a model that\u2019s universally accepted feels like trying to convince you of the truth.<\/p>\n<p>But, in case you\u2019re brand new to instructional design, <strong>here\u2019s a brief list of the advantages of the ADDIE instructional design model:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, with ADDIE you never get lost. The structure is so on-point that instructors know what action they need to take before they move to another one.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s great for online, offline, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blended-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blended learning<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Trainers can assess objectives and results to figure out what part of the course needs further attention.<\/li>\n<li>In an industry full of technicality, ADDIE puts design where it belongs (aka. into the core creation process) to engage more and more learners.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s the Father of all instructional design models, so it combines all of them together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, regarding the disadvantage(s), some instructional designers are not really fascinated with<strong> the idea of this linear approach and the waterfall model ADDIE promotes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Which is partially correct.<\/p>\n<p>To fully use the ADDIE model, you must be familiar with your course\u2019s objectives on the dot. Truth be told, ADDIE kind of assumes you know <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentcards.com\/blog\/training-objectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all your goals and requirements<\/a><\/strong> before you start developing or even experimenting with your content. The reason? You can just move from one stage to another, but you can only go forward in a circular motion. As a result, it\u2019s only when you reach the stage of Evaluation that you are free to jump back to one of the previous steps to revise it.<\/p>\n<p>So, in the Analysis stage, you need to analyze yourself and see if you know what you want your learners and yourself to get from the overall procedure.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion: ADDIE training model helps you reach your goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s be realistic.
