Discover our findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/gamification-survey-results-2018\/\">2018<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/gamification-survey-results\/\">2019<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Does gamification build community?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To understand if gamification could build a community, we asked respondents to indicate how often they comment, review and share content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The answers show that passive reading of course reviews and forum comments is more prevalent than writing reviews and commenting (83% versus 50%). Half of the users don&#8217;t bother sharing e-learning content on social media either. And a surprisingly large number (32%) rarely or never vote on content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1927 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question1.png\" alt=\"Gamification survey - question 1\" width=\"643\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These results show there&#8217;s huge room for improvement to design courses and features that will inspire learners to be part of their e-learning community.<\/p>\n<h2>Which game elements are most motivating?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The majority (62%) of respondents said they&#8217;d be motivated by leaderboards. Respondents also indicate that leaderboards would boost competition among learners. A whopping 89% said that a point system would increase their engagement with an e-learning application.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Users also indicated that they&#8217;re heavily (82%) in favor of multiple difficulty levels and explorable content. But they don&#8217;t seem to particularly care for badges or LMS links to existing social media, like Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question2.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 2\" width=\"650\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In any case, a strong demand for gamification is already here: <strong>79% of the respondents<\/strong> said they&#8217;d be more productive if their university\/institution or work was more game-like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1929 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question3.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 3\" width=\"579\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What about rewards?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To understand which kind of rewards might increase engagement, we asked respondents to rate a few options. We found that most users seem to prefer discounts on new content\/courses (69%) and access to exclusive content (78%).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rewards such as badges and score points, while gimmicky, still entice 60% and 50% of respondents respectively.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question4.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 4\" width=\"643\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A respectable percentage of users (25%) like online competitions, which they find &#8220;mostly fun&#8221;, while a large 60% majority finds them &#8220;sometimes fun&#8221;, something that shows that implementation matters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1931 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question5.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 5\" width=\"579\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What about other game elements?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From various\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/the-3-tiers-of-employee-gamification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gamification and engagement techniques<\/a>, users indicated they prefer progressing to different levels, scores, real-time performance feedback, and activity feeds. The least loved elements were virtual currencies, avatars, competition with friends, virtual gifts, and being part of a narrative (so-called &#8220;interactive fiction&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1935\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question9.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 9\" width=\"650\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Do people play games?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To look at the bigger picture, we asked respondents if they play games. And they do! An overwhelming majority (75%) responded that they play computer and\/or mobile games (50% &#8220;casually&#8221; and 27% &#8220;moderately to fairly often&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1936 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question10.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 10\" width=\"579\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1937 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/question11.png\" alt=\"Gamification Survey - Question 11\" width=\"579\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The survey results make a strong case for gamification as a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/ebook\/learner-engagement\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase learner engagement<\/a> in online learning. Because users reject some gamification elements while embracing others, it&#8217;s important to choose the right elements in your gamification strategy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The study of gamification in eLearning is far from over.
