From cultivating business contacts in LinkedIn to reading world news on Twitter, social media have become useful tools for both professional and personal development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But can we actually rely on social media for learning?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TikTok, one of the fastest-growing social media platforms and a Gen-Z favorite, seems to be pondering along the same lines lately. Famous for its fun, unfiltered content, TikTok is currently a marketing Swiss Army knife for brands and creators. Short, fun videos engage audiences and affect the way other social media platforms function.<\/p>\n<p>And now, the short-video sharing app is <strong>launching several initiatives tied to learning and education<\/strong>. Enter TikTok for learning.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll discuss what eLearning with TikTok would look like and whether (and to what extent) we can use it in employee training.<\/p>\n<h2>How is TikTok used for learning?<\/h2>\n<p>With about half of TikTok users being between 16-24 years old, it sounds like the app could be a great meeting point for learners and educators.<\/p>\n<p>One way to do that is through dedicated hashtags. The hashtag <strong>#LearnOnTikTok<\/strong> currently has 63,3 billion views but the content found there varies wildly. For instance, you can find everything from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@billnye\/video\/6851007564289690886?is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6919065505550845446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">science videos by Bill Nye<\/a><\/strong> to advice on \u201chow to beat car dealers\u201d, which makes browsing the hashtag chaotic.<\/p>\n<p>A much more targeted and curated approach is the <strong>#EduTok Program<\/strong>. According to the app, the idea of the program is to \u201cdemocratize learning\u201d, with a focus on their Indian market. There is currently an official TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@tiktokedutok?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>#EduTok account<\/strong><\/a> (368.1K followers) that promotes content from TEDtalks and inspirational videos. Working together with Josh Talks and The\/Nudge Foundation, TikTok aims to educate 5,000 young individuals through a mentorship program.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok for learning initiatives also include <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-in\/tik-tok-democratizes-e-learning-with-the-launch-of-the-edu-tok-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>strategic partnerships with educational institutions<\/strong><\/a> such as Toppr, Made Easy, and GradeUp. The content created through these partnerships could be an interesting example of how to do eLearning with TikTok. The short and to the point educational videos cover a variety of subjects from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@toppr.com\/video\/6812476475770539265?language=en&amp;sec_uid=MS4wLjABAAAAQLvl5xiere7ecUXEbPVUKDFySYKfpcsmqlbVQFzFxq_R72PvFY_nxwrKV67XYj9y&amp;share_app_name=musically&amp;timestamp=1570442882&amp;u_code=d6dh78d3j78798&amp;utm_campaign=client_share&amp;utm_medium=android&amp;utm_source=whatsapp&amp;source=h5_m&amp;lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6919065505550845446#\/@toppr.com\/video\/6812476475770539265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">myths and facts about COVID-19<\/a><\/strong> to discussing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@madeeasyofficial\/video\/6723428487501335810?is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=6919065505550845446#\/@madeeasyofficial\/video\/6723428487501335810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Feynman\u2019s Technique<\/a><\/strong>. The focus is again on the Indian market but it\u2019s not difficult to see how it could expand globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But does TikTok for learning actually work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When looking at the educational videos mentioned above, you immediately notice that the \u201cfun\u201d aspects of TikTok (i.e. the use of music and filters) are missing. It\u2019s your responsibility as the training provider to <strong>ensure your learning environment is safe, secure, and private<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok is\u2026 not that.<\/p>\n<p>Founder\/CEO of Digital Barriers Zak Doffman discusses some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2021\/01\/26\/why-you-should-stop-tiktok-tracking-your-apple-iphone-or-google-android-phone\/?sh=7ef6f24769de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TikTok\u2019s cybersecurity issues<\/strong><\/a>. One of the most alarming is that if you have your phone number linked to your profile, TikTok can use it to track you online. There have also been many attempts at data breaches on the app that could compromise anything from users&#8217; phone numbers and nicknames, to profile and avatar pictures \u2014 even user IDs.<\/p>\n<p>The company itself recognizes they have issues. TikTok recently announced they\u2019re making all accounts that belong to teens (from 13-15 years old) private by default. And if you opt to use TikTok for learning, you have the option to make your account private; accessible only to your employees. <strong>But your data won\u2019t be as secure as it should.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another problem that would further complicate training on TikTok is the app\u2019s <strong>non-chronological setup<\/strong>. The videos are algorithmically chosen and you swipe them through vertically. There\u2019s no easy way to see when each video was posted. Simply looking at what has made the platform so popular can give you a good sense of the elements you need to apply in your eLearning courses.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some lessons we can take from TikTok:<\/p>\n<h3>Video content<\/h3>\n<p>The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about using TikTok for learning is video training material. TikTok proved what we already knew: most people, especially in younger age brackets, prefer watching videos to reading when consuming content online.<\/p>\n<p>And although your employee training should contain all types of media, an emphasis on video content will help with engagement.<\/p>\n<h3>Up-to-date training content<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest success of TikTok is that it <strong>offers quantity and speed<\/strong> \u2014 if not always quality. Users are bombarded with information and need fresh resources. Gen Z loves fast, authentic, and shareable content that speaks to their values.<\/p>\n<p>These are qualities your employee training should also reflect \u2014 even if your current employees are mostly millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers.<\/p>\n<p>After all, Gen Z will be the future of our workforce.
