But when we\u2019re talking about cybercrime, the numbers tell a different story. <strong>Damages relating to cybercrime are expected to reach a value of <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityventures.com\/hackerpocalypse-cybercrime-report-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$6 trillion in 2021<\/a> alone.<\/strong> And with the rise of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are in hackers\u2019 crosshairs more than ever before.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200729005208\/en\/Tanium-Report-Reveals-90-Percent-of-Organizations-Experienced-an-Increase-in-Cyberattacks-due-to-COVID-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ninety percent of companies<\/a> faced an increase in cyberattacks due to the pandemic,<\/strong> according to a survey of 1,000 CXO\u2019s conducted in June 2020. Even more alarmingly, 93% of these CXO\u2019s said they were forced to delay security projects in order to help manage their company\u2019s transition to remote work.<\/p>\n<p>TalentLMS partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennasecurity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenna Security<\/a>, an industry-leading penetration testing and vulnerability management firm, to survey <strong>1,200 employees on their cybersecurity habits, knowledge of best practices, and ability to recognize security threats<\/strong>. Here are some of the staggering results that offer some explanation as to why cybercrime has grown into such a lucrative business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#How_much_do_employees_actually_know_about_cybersecurity\">69% of respondents have received cybersecurity training from their employers, and yet, when we asked them<br \/>\nto take a basic quiz, 61% failed<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#But_only_17_of_employees_in_information_services_passed_the_quiz_compared_to_57_of_healthcare_employees_As_a_matter_of_fact_employees_in_the_former_group_collectively_performed_worse_on_the_quiz_than_any_of_the_other_main_industries_respondents_were_employed_in\">Only 17% of surveyed employees working in information services passed the quiz, compared to 57% of healthcare<br \/>\nemployees<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#What_initiatives_have_companies_taken\">59% of employees received cybersecurity training in response to the rise in remote work as a result of the COVID-19<br \/>\npandemic<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#Confidence_vs_knowledge_how_protected_do_employees_feel\">60% of employees who failed our cybersecurity quiz report that they feel safe from threats<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#Enforcing_good_habits_easier_said_than_done\">More employees store their passwords in plaintext than those that keep them in password managers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#Office_vs_remote_working_different_environments_produce_different_habits\">Office employees report feeling safer from cybersecurity threats than remote ones, but have much worse security habits<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#How_can_companies_better_protect_themselves\">Experts offer advice on how to improve cybersecurity training initiatives for better results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong id=\"How_much_do_employees_actually_know_about_cybersecurity\">How much do employees actually know about cybersecurity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it \u2014 learning about cybersecurity probably isn\u2019t a top priority for the average employee, especially if they\u2019ve never been the victim of an attack (that they know of). Most employees who work in offices or remotely use a computer to do the majority of their work. But how much do they know about strong passwords, malware, phishing attempts, and more?<\/p>\n<p>With the help of top security experts from TalentLMS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennasecurity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenna Security<\/a>, we designed a seven-question quiz to discover just how much employees do or don\u2019t know about fundamental cybersecurity principles. Respondents ranged from 18\u201354+ in age, and work in a variety of industries in the U.S. They all use a computer to do most of their work, with <strong>43% working from an office, and 57% working remotely.<\/strong> Respondents who answered four or more questions correctly were considered as having passed the quiz, while those who got three or less correct failed.<\/p>\n<p>Based on this scoring system, <strong>60% of respondents failed the assessment<\/strong>. If an employee has never been taught about cybersecurity risks and best practices, then they can\u2019t be expected to know the answers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Except <strong>69% of all respondents have received cybersecurity training from their current employers<\/strong> (yes, we asked). For example, you\u2019d expect professionals working in information services and data to perform better on the quiz than professionals working in healthcare and social assistance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"But_only_17_of_employees_in_information_services_passed_the_quiz_compared_to_57_of_healthcare_employees_As_a_matter_of_fact_employees_in_the_former_group_collectively_performed_worse_on_the_quiz_than_any_of_the_other_main_industries_respondents_were_employed_in\">But <strong>only 17% of employees in information services passed the quiz, compared to 57% of healthcare employees<\/strong>. On the other hand, they were least knowledgeable in securing documents with sensitive information, and recognizing harmful file types.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, these quiz results show that <strong>the average employee\u2019s knowledge of cybersecurity threats and best practices is limited.<\/strong> And while most employers are providing their people with some kind of training on the topic, it\u2019s not hitting the mark, and has a poor return on investment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong id=\"What_initiatives_have_companies_taken\">What initiatives have companies taken?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While protecting themselves from cybersecurity threats and attacks has been a long-standing priority for companies, the COVID-19 pandemic further solidified this need as much of the world transitioned to working remotely. <strong>With a massive boost in online work also came ample opportunity for hackers to exploit any weaknesses in employees\u2019 systems and communications. And they did.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/ch\/en\/pages\/risk\/articles\/impact-covid-cybersecurity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent report by Deloitte<\/a>, more than 500,000 people worldwide were affected by cyberattacks on video conferencing services between February and May of 2020. These hackers stole and sold personal data on the dark web that they had intercepted from video calls.<\/p>\n<p>Most companies are at least aware of the increased threat brought on by remote work and have attempted to respond to it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16008 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"813\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-7.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-7-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-7-1024x268.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-7-768x201.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 813px) 100vw, 813px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The majority of employees also report that their companies have implemented the correct fundamental safeguards that provide essential protection from cybersecurity threats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>66% require employees to use <strong>2-factor authentication<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>67% have an established <strong>policy for reporting lost and stolen devices<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>75% enforce <strong>mandatory periodic password changes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite these numbers, it\u2019s no secret that determined <strong>hackers are way ahead of the protections that companies have put into place, and there\u2019s a lot of catching up to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;These survey results show that while most of the employees surveyed show that their companies are moving in the right direction, <strong>there is a large number of companies that are not providing basic cybersecurity training (31%) or offering multi-factor authentication for their systems (between 18 &#8211; 34%).<\/strong> These gaps in basic cybersecurity hygiene are what attackers often exploit and are a good reminder we still have a lot of work to do.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1d64b3;\"><strong>Jerry Gamblin<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Director of Security Research, Kenna Security<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong id=\"Confidence_vs_knowledge_how_protected_do_employees_feel\">Confidence vs. knowledge \u2014 how protected do employees feel?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Whether or not employees follow best practices and exhibit safe behaviors directly depends on if they feel the need to.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When we asked all respondents if they feel safe from cybersecurity threats, 56% responded \u201cyes,\u201d 25% \u201cno,\u201d and 19% \u201cunsure.\u201d<\/strong> The numbers skew even further when we look at the responses of employees who failed the quiz.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixty percent of people who answered less than four questions correctly answered \u201cyes\u201d to feeling safe from threats.<\/strong> Forty-nine percent of those who passed said the same.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16009\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-8.png\" alt=\"Survey: The State of Cybersecurity Training - How safe do employees feel?\" width=\"828\" height=\"552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-8.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-8-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-8-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-8-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. <strong>The theory states that people with very limited, or no knowledge on a particular topic tend to overestimate their ability in that area<\/strong>, and feel more confident than they reasonably should. As we gain knowledge in a particular field, we become more aware of all the things we don\u2019t actually know, and our confidence quickly declines.<\/p>\n<p>This reasoning offers an explanation as to why <strong>74% of respondents who answered every single question incorrectly report feeling safe<\/strong>. Meanwhile, not one of the mere 4 of 1,200 respondents (0.33%) who got all seven questions correct said the same.<\/p>\n<h2><strong id=\"Enforcing_good_habits_easier_said_than_done\">Enforcing good habits \u2014 easier said than done<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Establishing company-wide policies is one thing, but actually getting people to follow them is another. The fact is that <strong>companies are only truly protected when their employees follow cybersecurity best practices.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/i.crn.com\/sites\/default\/files\/ckfinderimages\/userfiles\/images\/crn\/custom\/IBMSecurityServices2014.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM\u2019s 2014 Cybersecurity Intelligence Index<\/a> found that <strong>95% of breaches were caused by human error<\/strong>. A similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cybsafe.com\/press-releases\/human-error-to-blame-for-9-in-10-uk-cyber-data-breaches-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 study conducted by CybSafe<\/a> found that number to be 90% among UK cyber data breaches.<\/p>\n<p>According to our survey results, <strong>77% of employees reported that their company has an established cybersecurity policy<\/strong>, but 19% of them admit they\u2019re not familiar with it.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most basic ways that a company keeps its data safe is through strong and secure passwords. We asked employees where they store their passwords, and the results left much to be desired.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-9.png\" alt=\"Cybersecurity Survey: Where do employees store their password?\" width=\"783\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-9.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-9-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-9-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-9-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A stunning 33% of employees store their passwords in their browsers \u2014 a habit that is far riskier than most realize. Suppose an employee hasn\u2019t set up a master password; in this case, <strong>it\u2019s possible for anyone who has access to their computer, either physically or remotely, to open the browser and view the person\u2019s actual passwords.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even worse than storing passwords in the browser is storing them in plaintext, or written on paper. Storing them this way leaves them completely unprotected. Anyone could find the paper, or access the unencrypted file where they\u2019re written, with minimal effort.<\/p>\n<p>Nine percent of employees even claimed that they simply remember all of their passwords. But considering the huge number of passwords an average person has, it\u2019s highly unlikely that they remember them all without reusing the same password for multiple accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/most-people-have-25-more-passwords-than-at-the-start-of-the-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a study conducted by NordPass<\/a> found that <strong>the average person has between 70-80 passwords<\/strong>. The company reconducted the study and revealed in October 2020 that <strong>the number is now around 100, a 25% increase.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ideally, every password a person has should be completely unique from all their others. But it&#8217;s safe to say that this isn\u2019t the case for at least<strong> 73% of respondents who aren\u2019t using a password manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One survey respondent even specified, <em>\u201cI typically don\u2019t write my passwords down. I try to keep them the same. When I have to change one, I change the rest to match.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For these reasons, <strong>experts assert that the only right answer to where people should be storing their passwords, both work and personal, is in a password manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As with employee knowledge, the impact that training has on employee behaviors is mixed. Five percent of the employees who have not received training don\u2019t use any security features to protect their work computer. Eighty-eight percent use a password, compared to 79% of those without training. Forty-eight percent use encryption, compared to 28% without training. And 29% of trained employees use a password manager, compared to 22% of those without training.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are two notable exceptions where employees with training actually exhibit more unsafe behavior than those without:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>34% of those with training still store their passwords in plaintext, compared to 16% of those without training<\/li>\n<li>60% use public WiFi to work, compared to 52% of those without training<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong id=\"Office_vs_remote_working_different_environments_produce_different_habits\">Office vs. remote working \u2014 different environments produce different habits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Remote workers have always presented a challenge to companies\u2019 efforts to secure themselves from cybersecurity threats, and <strong>the surge in remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic has only intensified the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cyberattacks grow more sophisticated every day, and hackers have stepped up their game, particularly over the last year. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/ch\/en\/pages\/risk\/articles\/impact-covid-cybersecurity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20% of attacks<\/a> were carried out using previously unseen malware or other methods. That number has jumped up to 35% since the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Remote employees are aware that things have changed. The survey results revealed that <strong>remote workers collectively feel less safe than office employees<\/strong> <em>\u2014 but are they?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-11.png\" alt=\"Survey: How safe do office and remote employees feel from cybersecurity threats?\" width=\"754\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-11.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-11-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-11-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/cybersecurity-training-survey-talentlms-11-768x404.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This difference in perceived safety offers a possible explanation for the fact that <strong>remote employees actually demonstrate better cybersecurity habits than their office-bound counterparts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>32%<\/strong> of remote employees use a password manager, compared to only <strong>20%<\/strong> of office employees<\/li>\n<li><strong>49%<\/strong> of remote employees protect their laptops using encryption, compared to <strong>32%<\/strong> of office workers<\/li>\n<li><strong>65%<\/strong> of office workers report they sometimes use their personal devices for work, compared to <strong>49%<\/strong> of remote workers who said the same<\/li>\n<li><strong>36%<\/strong> of office workers store their passwords in plaintext, compared to only <strong>22%<\/strong> of remote workers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line is that whether employees are working remotely, in-office, or some combination of these two, <strong>companies need to take active and pointed steps towards enforcing safe behavior<\/strong> to protect themselves from ever-evolving cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong id=\"How_can_companies_better_protect_themselves\">How can companies better protect themselves?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Respondents\u2019 overall performance on the quiz was quite disheartening, with over half of them failing to answer at least four out of seven questions correctly. And while the survey results show that <strong>training does have a positive impact on some aspects of employees\u2019 cybersecurity habits, these effects are not consistent across all areas,<\/strong> and there is plenty of room for improvement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how can companies do better?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>TalentLMS\u2019s <\/strong><span style=\"color: #1d64b3;\"><strong>Chief Information Security Officer, Victor Kritakis, <\/strong><\/span><strong>spelled it out for us:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cSimply offering a cybersecurity training program does not guarantee, per se, a skilled or educated staff.
