We examined how employees view appreciation practices. And their favorite ways of receiving recognition. Moreover, we explored AI\u2019s potential for bridging the employee recognition gap. The research also dug into the generational differences surrounding appreciation. And investigated whether remote and on-site employees are equally recognized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results? At a top level, we see mixed feelings around workplace recognition. But what does this look like in detail?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s see what else the data revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is employee appreciation affected by work location? Nearly half say no<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty-five percent of employees feel acknowledged, whether they work remotely or on-site. Only a minority, 16%, feel they receive less recognition when working off-site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition-270x300.png\" alt=\"Appreciation at work survey graph\" width=\"508\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition-270x300.png 270w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition-922x1024.png 922w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition-768x853.png 768w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition-1382x1536.png 1382w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-remote-work-reckognition.png 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tells us two things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, most companies have good recognition practices across different working environments and arrangements. But they still need to work to bridge the gap between remote and on-site set-ups. Sixteen percent may seem like a small portion of the respondents. But distance is impacting the visibility of some employees&#8217; efforts and contributions. And, to ensure parity for all, calls for strategies that target that minority.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generational divide: Younger employees report feeling less valued than their older colleagues<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diving deeper into the data, a divide in views across age groups emerges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Seventy percent of employees over 54 years old report feeling recognized at work. This contrasts starkly with younger employees. Only 49% of people 24 years and younger feel appreciated. At the same time,\u00a0<b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">30%<\/b>\u00a0<b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">of Gen Z workers don\u2019t feel appreciated,\u00a0<\/b>whereas 21% report being neutral.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unequal distribution of respondents across age categories does impact these findings. It means they offer a broad view, rather than precise comparisons. Yet, they clearly underscore a generational divide in workplace recognition. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/404693\/generation-disconnected-data-gen-workplace.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research by Gallup <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backs this up. According to their data, engagement levels for Gen Zers are low. Specifically? Over half of the youngest employees are ambivalent or not engaged at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinning down the appreciation gap: Most employees feel recognized, but not sufficiently\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s start with the good news. Less than one-quarter of employees, 23%, feel underappreciated at work. While a healthy 62% feel appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is feeling appreciated enough?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the findings on employee appreciation were conflicting. So to deconstruct the nuances we looked at perception and frequency of appreciation. Here&#8217;s what we found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-eight percent of workers <\/span><b>rarely<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>never<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> receive praise for their work from managers. And 33% are recognized only sometimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which means? <\/span><b>A combined 61% of the workforce don\u2019t get regular appreciation from their supervisors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or don&#8217;t feel as if they&#8217;re appreciated.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20662\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey-300x250.png\" alt=\"Appreciation at work survey 2024 graph\" width=\"535\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey-1024x853.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey-768x640.png 768w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey-1536x1280.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-frequency-survey.png 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studyfinds.org\/workers-feel-underappreciated-by-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes further with this. Over half (59%) of employees feel they&#8217;ve never had a boss who appreciated them, it says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our data revealed other areas in need of a tune-up. Forty-seven percent of employees feel appreciated on a day-to-day basis. But a <\/span><b>significant 36% think their work is only acknowledged through formal evaluations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, managers have a lot of room to step up their appreciation skills. They need to offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/employee-appreciation-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>praise more regularly<\/strong>,<\/a> both formally and informally. And they need to work harder to ensure that praise (when it&#8217;s given) is effectively delivered and accurately received.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What form of appreciation do employees value the most?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees across various sectors have long preferred cash bonuses over other rewards. And our survey results confirm this is still the case for most employees. But not all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As illustrated in the graph below, out of all employees surveyed, <\/span><b>59% favor cash bonuses over PTO<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This particular reward type is then followed by paid time off (PTO), then gifts or gift cards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-205x300.png\" alt=\"Employee appreciation survey graph\" width=\"551\" height=\"806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-205x300.png 205w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-701x1024.png 701w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-768x1122.png 768w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-1051x1536.png 1051w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms-1402x2048.png 1402w, https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Graph-employee-appreciation-survey-favorite-forms.png 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when we break this down by generation, we start to see the split.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cash bonuses rank are the top-voted employee reward across generations, but the youngest workers\u2019 top pick is PTO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Younger employees still opt for tangible rewards over accolades. But, given the choice, Gen Z employees picked PTO over cash.<\/span><b> The youngest working generation, up to 24 years old, ranked PTO as the most valuable form of appreciation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This choice suggests a deeper longing for work-life balance over monetary incentives. It also indicates a shift in mindset. Younger generations don\u2019t view PTO as a mere perk but as the most desired form of appreciation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&amp;D and appreciation: The majority feel valued through workplace learning, yet 3 in 10 seek recognition for skill growth\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace learning and appreciation are key ingredients of a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/appreciation-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culture of growth and recognition<\/a><\/strong>. And they significantly impact employee satisfaction. This dynamic is highlighted by our survey results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most employees acknowledge the link between L&amp;D and appreciation: <strong>Fifty-four percent <\/strong><\/span><b>said their company shows appreciation by investing in training and development opportunities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Half of respondents also give their companies a nod for recognizing when employees level up their skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there&#8217;s a twist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty percent aren&#8217;t happy with how their companies show appreciation when they do elevate their capabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings point to the need for two things. Companies should invest in their employees&#8217; professional development. But they also need to follow up by offering recognition of the skills and expertise gained.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI-powered praise: Over a third of employees embrace AI\u2019s appreciation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role of artificial intelligence in employee recognition emerged as a dividing topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one side, there is a mild favorability towards AI-driven recognition. <strong>Thirty-six percent <\/strong><\/span><b>of employees find it gratifying to receive appreciation and recognition from AI for their work contributions. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And 41% think AI-driven programs could enhance their company&#8217;s approach to employee recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side, a slightly lower percentage of employees is skeptical in both cases. Thirty-three percent don\u2019t value praise from AI. So logic suggests the application of AI needs to respect this. But we&#8217;ve also learned that frequency of praise is an issue. This opens up a clear role for AI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By leveraging generative tech, managers can automate some elements of the recognition process. An even larger proportion, 56%, agree their company celebrates work anniversaries and milestones. And showcases a culture that values and celebrates employees\u2019 special moments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This indicates, in general, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/employee-recognition-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive culture of acknowledgment<\/a>. Backed up by a personalized approach to recognition. Which is mirrored by another finding. Fifty-two percent of employees said that employee appreciation is personalized in their company.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrapping up: Addressing under-the-radar challenges<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The power of gratitude in the workplace transcends mere acknowledgment. It&#8217;s a simple yet profound force that nurtures a positive culture. What does that look like? Increased job satisfaction, loyalty, and a sense of belonging. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/how-to-empower-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strong, collaborative teams<\/a>. Thriving ecosystems. And a foundation of respect and support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, it propels people and organizations to success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve all of this takes a strategic approach. Which is where this survey comes in. Our data highlights a number of under-the-radar challenges that shouldn\u2019t be overlooked. Yes, most employees feel valued by leadership and, in general, recognized by their organization. But an appreciation gap remains\u2014particularly among younger employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data also sheds light on cracks in middle management\u2019s approach to appreciation. And reveals room for improvement in amping up the frequency. Finally, it unpacks the need for more diversified and frequent recognition strategies. Alongside a commitment to exploring AI&#8217;s role in enhancing appreciation strategically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So. Lots to work on. Lots to improve on.
