{"id":5394,"date":"2016-07-25T18:11:40","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T15:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/?p=5394"},"modified":"2024-11-15T17:25:19","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:25:19","slug":"instructor-led-training-talentlms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/instructor-led-training-talentlms\/","title":{"rendered":"The many faces of eLearning #2: Instructor-led Training with TalentLMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wise man once wrote that &#8220;what we call online learning, or eLearning, is not a single thing, but many&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s not exactly a Paolo Coelho-caliber quotation &#8212; after all the wise man was me, and I wrote it in the introduction of the first part of this series of posts, but it\u2019s still an apt description of the situation. There are tons of different ways to do eLearning, and tons of different business needs that online learning can be applied to.<\/p>\n<p>In this series of posts, we\u2019ll take a look at how TalentLMS fares for each and every variety of online learning. In our first post, we covered <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/what-is-compliance-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Compliance Training<\/a><\/strong>; this one is all about <strong>Instructor-led Training<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Instructor-led Training 101<\/h2>\n<p>Instructor-led Training, also known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/the-effective-blended-learning-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blended learning<\/a><\/strong> or hybrid learning, is not one of the different business cases for eLearning (like e.g. Compliance Training and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/employee-onboarding-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Employee Onboarding<\/a><\/strong> are), but a different way to perform training and manage learning sessions.<\/p>\n<p>To put it simply, Instructor-led Training,\u00a0which, from now on we\u2019ll be calling <strong>ILT, is just the practice of combining online training with traditional, classroom-based (or online, but real time) seminars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it can be combined with all the other categories of training, e.g. hybrid employee onboarding courses, hybrid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/solutions\/compliance-training-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>compliance training<\/strong><\/a>, etc. In practice, though, you\u2019ll only really need ILT in special situations, as pure online learning courses are more than capable of covering most of your employee training needs.<\/p>\n<h2>When does\u00a0Instructor-led Training make sense?<\/h2>\n<p>But, Mr. TalentLMS-blog-guy, you might ask, why would we want to go back to the ancient days of classroom-based training, when we have all this new online training technology at our disposal?<\/p>\n<p>Well, first, you don\u2019t need to choose one or the other. <strong>TalentLMS allows you to combine both with the same ease, and manage online and in-person training from the same intuitive interface.\u00a0<\/strong>As for the need for hybrid learning setups, it\u2019s simple really.<\/p>\n<p>Classroom-based training is still the best and most immediate way to approach certain kinds of material, especially anything that requires hands-on practice.\u00a0You can learn a lot about cooking or how to fly an airplane online, for example, and especially all the theoretical stuff associated with those activities, but in the end, you just need to have a go at the real thing.\u00a0The same thing\u00a0is\u00a0true for lots of kinds of corporate training (operating some kinds of industrial machinery, working on the assembly line, practicing &#8220;business English&#8221;, etc).<\/p>\n<p>That said, there\u2019s also a third option, somewhere in between online and classroom-based training, that might be just what you need: we\u2019re talking about <strong>real-time instructor-led webinars and teleconference sessions<\/strong>. For cases where immediate aural and visual feedback is required, but tactile access is not important, these might be enough to cover all your ILT needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Instructor-led training support in TalentLMS<\/h2>\n<p>So, how well does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/features\/blended-learning-lms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TalentLMS handle Instructor-led training<\/strong><\/a>? Very well, if I may say so, but, as always, keeping the whole process simple and intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>At the most basic level, TalentLMS models ILT through a special kind of lesson (called, expectedly, <strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/help.talentlms.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360014660053-How-to-create-an-Instructor-Led-Training-ILT-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Units<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong>), where each &#8220;Unit&#8221; may contain one or more <strong>&#8220;Sessions&#8221;<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/help.talentlms.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360014660033-How-to-add-multi-day-sessions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sessions are the &#8220;live&#8221; (real time) lectures<\/a><\/strong> that can take place either in the physical world (e.g. a classroom) or online (e.g. webinar).<\/p>\n<p><strong>TalentLMS instructors can create new ILT units from the Courses page, by selecting &#8220;Instructor-Led Training&#8221;<\/strong> from the dropdown control, and giving the new unit a name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9239\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/create-ilt-session.png\" alt=\"Create ILT Session in TalentLMS - TalentLMS Blog\" width=\"2324\" height=\"1317\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The next step would be assigning one or more sessions (of the &#8220;classroom&#8221; or &#8220;webinar&#8221; type) to the newly created unit.<\/strong> Those require the instructor to specify their start date, duration and (in the case of classroom-based sessions) their location and maximum capacity of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/add-ilt-session.png\" alt=\"Add ILT Session in TalentLMS - TalentLMS Blog\" width=\"2324\" height=\"1165\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upcoming ILT sessions are shown on each learner\u2019s TalentLMS dashboard ahead of time<\/strong> (so that they can find courses that look interesting and register to them). This happens for both classroom-based courses and webinars, with the latter also allowing the learners to attend them online by clicking the &#8220;Join Webinar&#8221; link when their time arrives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ilt-user.png\" alt=\"ILT Session Notification - TalentLMS Blog\" width=\"2324\" height=\"1176\" \/>Instructors can also notify the users of new ILT event by leveraging the Notifications feature to set up notifications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On ILT session creation<\/li>\n<li>On ILT session registration<\/li>\n<li>X hours before an ILT session starts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Learn how this can be done in our step by step guide, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/help.talentlms.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360014572574-What-are-the-notifications-triggered-by-ILT-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>And as for the learners, well they can register either through their dashboard, as mentioned above, or directly through their calendar page, where they can view all the available ILT events. Piece of cake, eh?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/calendar-register-ilt-session-user.png\" alt=\"User Register To ILT Event From Calendar - TalentLMS Blog\" width=\"2324\" height=\"1320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Managing the ILT event&#8217;s users is equally easy: Instructors can change the learners&#8217; status from \u201cpending\u201d to \u201cpassed\u201d or \u201cnot passed\u201d (fail), notify them via email or remove them from the session, all from the Users tab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9244\" src=\"https:\/\/www.talentlms.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ilt-user-management.png\" alt=\"ILT event user management - TalentLMS Blog\" width=\"2324\" height=\"971\" \/>This is pretty much to\u00a0<strong>TalentLMS\u2019 support for blended learning<\/strong>. These constructs are powerful enough to cover all the common hybrid learning scenarios, and simple enough that you can get going with ILT in mere minutes.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>In today\u2019s post, the second in our &#8220;many faces of eLearning&#8221; series,<strong> we had a look at Instructor-led training and TalentLMS\u2019 support for it<\/strong>.
