When doing our research for infographic, we found so many information we couldn’t decide what to include – as you can see, the infographic is already quite long so we had to cut some parts out.
But we thought that all the data we found is worth sharing and this is why we decided to publish a more extended version in a form of two articles with the top eLearning trends to follow in 2015!
1. Big Data
Numbers in eLearning are becoming so large that processing data sets with traditional ways becomes impossible.
Only in USA 46% of college students take online courses and they are just one cohort of eLearning users. Big data is not only a problem when it comes to processing it, but it is also an opportunity to improve eLearning tremendously.
Here are some examples of why Big Data can be one of the beneficial eLearning trends:
- It can broaden the understanding of the learning process. Example: Statistics on completion time and rate.
- It can help tracking learner and group patterns. Example: How people click and go over the material.
- It can help in personalizing courses. Example: What are the differences in behaviour for certain user cohorts.
- It allows to analyze relevant feedback. Example: Where learners spend more time and what parts they find harder.
Gamification is the concept of applying game mechanics and game design techniques to engage and motivate people to achieve their goals.
It does not equal games.
It only takes the elements of games and applies them into a learning environment. Gamification taps into the basic desires and needs of the user’s impulses, which revolve around the idea of Status and Achievement.
Why is gamification one of the most important eLearning trends?
- Learners recall just 10% of what they read and 20% of what they hear. If there are visuals accompanying an oral presentation, the number rises to 30%, and if they observe someone carrying out an action while explaining it, 50%. But learners remember 90% “if they do the job themselves, even if only as a simulation (report from the 2006 Summit on Educational Games by the Federation of American Scientists )
- Almost 80% of the learners say that they would be more productive if their university/institution or work was more game-like. (TalentLMS survey)
- Almost 90% of users find online competitions fun, but 60% of them point that it’s only fun sometimes. something that shows that implementation matters. (TalentLMS survey)
Every learner has different learning needs and aspirations, and that’s why personalization in eLearning is so important.
Personalized learning is regarded as one of the top engineering problems of our era as it can have an important effect on the outcome of the learning progress. It is not only individualization or differentiation, it affords the learner a degree of choice about what is learned, when it is learned and how it is learned.
Examples of Personalized Learning:
- Adjusting the pace of instruction so that instruction is more individualized.
- Adjusting the learning approach so that instruction is differentiated.
- Letting learner choose his/her own learning path
- Adjusting the form of content presentation between text and audio or video
M-learning or Mobile Learning is the way of learning via handheld devices such as smartphones, tablets and any other handheld information technology device.
Mobile continues to grow and disruptive mobile learning tools keep coming. So, mobile will soon become the dominant medium for offering learning material.
Why is it one of the more beneficial eLearning trends:
- Easy access – users can access the course anywhere they are and anytime they need it or have some free time
- Blended learning approach – mobile learning allows to blend physical movement with reading, listening, watching videos, gamification, social and asynchronous learning
- Contextual learning – thanks to QR codes, GPS and other technologies, mobile learning lets you put learning in a context, depending on the location of the learner. It’s also great base for using augmented reality
- Digestible content – smaller screen forces educators to deliver content in smaller chunks which makes it easier for learners to remember what they learned
- Cloud – easy access to the cloud lets users have constant access to project materials from their phone and any other device that is not used to take the course
5. Focus on Return-on-Investment
Return on investment (ROI) compares the monetary investment in a training with the benefits over a specified period of time. Despite the traditional difficulty of calculating the ROI, its importance will rise, as it provides a strong argument in favor of e-learning.
What to consider when calculating ROI:
- Personnel – instructional designers, administrators
- Technology – IT infrastructure, LMS etc.
- Content – courses, virtual materials
- Other, hiddden – promotional costs etc
- Travel savings
- Trainer cost savings
- Savings on any training logistics – facilities etc
